Security forces have apprehended two militants linked to banned organizations in Manipur's Imphal West and East districts, accused of engaging in extortion activities. This information was disclosed by the police on Wednesday.
A senior official reported that a 37-year-old member of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) was arrested on Tuesday from his residence in Kwakehthel, Imphal West, for allegedly extorting money from the public.
Additionally, a 25-year-old member of the banned group Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was taken into custody on Monday in Kongpal Khaidem Leikai, Imphal East, for his involvement in extortion activities. Security operations have been ongoing in Manipur since ethnic conflicts erupted two years ago.
Since May 2023, over 260 individuals have lost their lives in ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, leading to thousands being displaced. Following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, the central government imposed President's Rule in Manipur, suspending the state assembly until 2027.
